Have been looking for a replacement for my third (and last) Belkin N52. Belkin’s newer offering isn’t of interest.
Am not going to touch on each feature of the G13, but rather, just the features I like.
The Logitech G13 Game pad was out of the box, connected and installed in under 10 minutes. Working through the device configuration is an ongoing matter, done as needed. The only problem encountered is what to do with all the extra keys. The device itself is a solid desktop component. 6 traction pads on the bottom keep it from shifting or moving under hand. The Palm pad is simple in design, very comfortable and it works better for me than the contoured style palm rest. 22 keys on the main pad, two around the toggle and the toggle is also clickable downwards. The clear and easily read labels on the keys are difficult to see when gaming because of the angle presented at, but this hasn’t presented a problem. The Four main movement keys (WAS&D) contain minor divots allowing for swift re-orientation. The display panel offers; Stopwatch / Countdown; RSS News Feed; CPU & RAM Usage Monitors; Date and Time; A Power button. Additionally, though not employed in the games I play, the panel may be used to display in game equipment levels and other live game data from some games.
It’s looks, though not unpleasant, took time to grow on me. It’s now a combination of a great functioning device with good physical features draws me to conclude it exceeded initial expectations.
Support is from Logitech, a wealth of information on each of its products. The G13 being no exception. One picto-manual (no words) in 35+ languages on the G13. The G13 site pages were surprisingly easy to navigate.
For any not aware of the advantage a game pad offers: Each movement or action is performed using the same key regardless of game being played.
PRO: Not having to learn new key maps to effectively play new games.
CON: Having to spend time configuring the Game Pad to the Games Key Map.
ie – If you use the ‘G7′ key to cast the spell sending all opponents to the Corn Field in one game.
The same G7 key would be used to throw the real big bomb and blow all away, in another game.
Game profiles are managed through the G-series Key Profiler. Once the first profile is built, it can be used as a template for others. So once familiar with the game pad and configured to best support the personal style of play. The resulting profile can be used as the base template for other games. Having a pad set up properly allows the gamer to concentrate on the game play and not have to cross reference which key does what action.
Most telling comment I can pass along: If this one failed on me, I’d order a new one.
